Where to Stay in Takayama 2026: Best Areas for First-Time Visitors

Wondering where to stay in Takayama?

For most first-time visitors, the decision is surprisingly easy.

Stay either:

near Takayama Station

or:

between Takayama Station and the Old Town.

Takayama is compact and extremely walkable.

Unlike Tokyo or Osaka, you don’t need to choose your hotel based around train lines or spend 30 minutes travelling to the main attractions every morning.

The historic Sanmachi district is only around:

12 minutes on foot from JR Takayama Station.

That means you can stay near the station for transport convenience while still walking to:

  • Sanmachi Old Town
  • Miyagawa Morning Market
  • Takayama Jinya
  • Hida beef restaurants
  • Sake breweries
  • Bars
  • Nakabashi Bridge

If atmosphere matters more than transport:

stay closer to Sanmachi Old Town.

If you’re arriving from Shirakawa-go with luggage or leaving early:

stay closer to Takayama Station.

And if you want the full traditional Japan experience:

book a ryokan with an onsen.

Here’s where to stay in Takayama in 2026.

1. Takayama Station

Best for: Transport + one-night stays + luggage

If convenience is your priority:

stay near JR Takayama Station.

This is especially useful if you’re arriving by:

  • Train
  • Highway bus
  • Bus from Shirakawa-go

Takayama Nohi Bus Center is beside the station.

That makes this area extremely convenient if your wider itinerary looks like:

Kanazawa → Shirakawa-go → Takayama → Nagoya.

You arrive.

Walk to your hotel.

Drop your luggage.

Then walk into town.

How Far Is the Old Town?

Sanmachi is approximately:

12 minutes on foot.

That’s the important part.

Staying at Takayama Station doesn’t mean sacrificing sightseeing convenience.

You’re still close to almost everything.

Who Should Stay Near Takayama Station?

Choose this area if:

  • You’re staying one night
  • You have large luggage
  • You’re arriving from Shirakawa-go
  • You’re leaving early
  • You’re taking day trips
  • You’re travelling with children
  • You want modern hotels
  • You want better-value accommodation

Best Hotels Near Takayama Station

There are several good options around the station.

TOKYU STAY Hida-Takayama Musubi no Yu

A strong choice if you want:

modern accommodation + excellent transport convenience + Japanese touches.

It’s extremely close to the station and useful for travellers arriving with luggage.

Mercure Hida Takayama

Another modern option close to the station.

This works particularly well for travellers who prefer:

a contemporary international-style hotel

rather than a traditional ryokan.

Residence Hotel Takayama Station

Useful for:

longer stays + families + travellers wanting more space.

Apartment-style accommodation can be especially practical if you’re travelling for more than a night or two.

Takayama Ouan

A popular option near the station for travellers who still want:

Japanese atmosphere + bathing facilities

without sacrificing convenience.

Station Area Verdict

For:

one night in Takayama

this would probably be my first choice.

For two nights:

it’s still excellent.

2. Between Takayama Station and Old Town

Best overall area for first-time visitors

If you want me to choose one location for most travellers:

stay somewhere between the station and Sanmachi.

This gives you the best of both worlds.

You’re close to:

transport

but also close to:

restaurants + bars + markets + historic sights.

You can walk everywhere.

Why This Area Works So Well

From a centrally located hotel, you can walk to:

  • Takayama Station
  • Miyagawa Morning Market
  • Takayama Jinya
  • Sanmachi
  • Nakabashi
  • Hida Kokubunji
  • Restaurants
  • Bars

You won’t need:

taxis + local trains + complicated transport planning.

Who Should Stay Here?

Almost everyone.

Particularly:

  • First-time visitors
  • Couples
  • Food-focused travellers
  • Two-night stays
  • People following our Takayama itinerary
  • Visitors who want nightlife
  • Travellers without a car

Good Central Hotel Options

Spa Hotel Alpina Hida Takayama

This location works particularly well because it’s between:

the station and the main historic area.

Chisun Grand Takayama

Another convenient central option.

Temple Hotel Takayama Zenko-ji

For something more unusual:

staying at a temple accommodation gives you a very different experience from a standard business hotel.

Central Takayama Verdict

For a first trip:

this is the safest choice.

You get almost all of the convenience of the station with easier access to the historic centre.

3. Sanmachi Old Town

Best for: Atmosphere + couples + historic Takayama

If waking up near traditional wooden streets sounds better than being beside the station:

stay around Sanmachi.

This is Takayama’s famous preserved merchant district.

Traditional townhouses line streets such as:

Kamiichinomachi

Kamininomachi

and:

Kamisannomachi.

This is also where you’ll find:

  • Sake breweries
  • Hida beef
  • Traditional shops
  • Cafes
  • Historic architecture

Why Stay Here?

The biggest advantage comes:

early and late.

During the middle of the day:

Sanmachi can become busy.

But if you’re sleeping nearby:

you can walk through the streets early in the morning before the day visitors arrive.

Then return:

after the shops close.

The atmosphere is completely different.

Who Should Stay in Sanmachi?

Choose this area if:

  • Atmosphere matters
  • You’re travelling as a couple
  • Photography is important
  • You like historic accommodation
  • You want sake breweries nearby
  • You enjoy evening walks
  • You’re staying two nights or longer

Best Accommodation Around Sanmachi

HOTEL WOOD TAKAYAMA

This is an excellent location if your priority is:

the historic district.

You’re staying directly around Kamininomachi rather than walking over from the station.

KURANE VILLA SANMACHI

Another option directly in the historic area.

This type of accommodation makes more sense if you’re looking for:

experience + location

rather than simply somewhere to sleep.

Main Disadvantage

Luggage.

The station isn’t far.

But:

12 minutes with a small suitcase

and:

12 minutes dragging two giant suitcases through snow

are very different experiences.

If you’re travelling heavily:

consider forwarding your luggage or staying closer to the station.

4. Honmachi and Central Takayama

Best for: Food + bars + evening atmosphere

Honmachi sits between the station side of town and the historic areas.

This is an excellent location if your Takayama priorities include:

food + nightlife.

You’re close to:

  • Restaurants
  • Bars
  • Miyagawa River
  • Morning market
  • Sanmachi
  • Nakabashi

And you can still walk to the station.

Who Should Stay Here?

Choose central Takayama if:

  • You want to eat out every night
  • You’re interested in Takayama nightlife
  • You want Hida beef restaurants nearby
  • You drink sake
  • You want to walk home after bars
  • You don’t want to stay directly beside the station

This is particularly good for:

couples.

Ryokan Option

Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan / associated Hiranoya properties

The Hiranoya location near Nakabashi is excellent for travellers looking for:

traditional Japanese hospitality in the centre of Takayama.

You’re close to both:

Takayama Jinya + Sanmachi.

This is the sort of stay I’d consider for:

a special trip or anniversary.

5. Northern Old Town and Shimoninomachi

Best for: Quieter historic atmosphere

Most visitors immediately think:

Sanmachi

when they hear Takayama Old Town.

But the historic area continues farther north.

The Shimoninomachi-Ojinmachi preservation area has a much more:

lived-in atmosphere.

You’ll find traditional:

  • Houses
  • Mochi shops
  • Confectionery stores
  • Antique dealers
  • Tatami businesses
  • Restaurants
  • Local shops

It’s less commercialised than Sanmachi.

Why Stay Here?

Because it feels:

quieter + more local.

You’re also well positioned for:

  • Miyagawa Morning Market
  • Yoshijima Heritage House
  • Kusakabe Folk Museum
  • Sakurayama Hachimangu
  • Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall

Who Should Stay Here?

Choose northern Takayama if:

  • You’ve visited Japan before
  • You prefer quiet streets
  • You want a residential atmosphere
  • You enjoy walking
  • You don’t need to be beside the station

Main Disadvantage

You’ll be slightly farther from:

Takayama Station.

It’s still manageable.

But if you’re arriving with large luggage:

the station area is easier.

6. Ryokan and Onsen Stays

Best for: Traditional Japanese experience

Some travellers shouldn’t choose an area first.

They should choose:

the ryokan.

If one of your main reasons for staying in Takayama is experiencing:

  • Tatami
  • Futon bedding
  • Japanese dinner
  • Japanese breakfast
  • Onsen
  • Traditional hospitality

then it’s worth choosing accommodation based around:

the property itself.

Ryokan vs Hotel

Choose a ryokan if:

the accommodation is part of the experience.

Choose a hotel if:

the accommodation is mainly a base for sightseeing.

Neither is better.

They’re different trips.

Central Ryokan

For most first-time visitors:

I’d still favour:

a centrally located ryokan.

That gives you the traditional experience while allowing you to walk around Takayama.

Quieter Ryokan

A property farther from the centre can make sense if you want:

onsen + dinner + relaxation.

But understand the trade-off.

Once you’re back at the ryokan:

you may not want to head out again.

Best Area for First-Time Visitors

My choice:

between Takayama Station and Sanmachi Old Town.

Why?

Because Takayama is small.

You don’t need to choose:

transport OR sightseeing.

You can have both.

Find a hotel roughly:

5–10 minutes from the station

and:

5–10 minutes from the historic centre

and you’re almost perfectly positioned.

Best Area for One Night

Stay:

near Takayama Station.

This is especially true if you’re following:

Kanazawa → Shirakawa-go → Takayama.

You’ll arrive at the Nohi Bus Center.

Walk to your hotel.

Check in.

Then explore.

The next morning:

you’re already near the station when it’s time to leave.

Best Area for Two Nights

Stay:

central Takayama.

I’d move slightly closer toward:

Old Town + Honmachi

than I would for a one-night stay.

Two nights gives you time to enjoy:

Takayama itself

rather than treating the city as a transport stop.

Best Area for Three Nights

You have more flexibility.

Either stay:

centrally

and use Takayama as your base.

Or:

combine stays.

For example:

2 nights central Takayama

plus:

1 night in an onsen/ryokan farther into the mountains.

That gives you two completely different experiences.

Best Area for Couples

I’d choose:

Old Town / central Takayama.

Your evening can be:

Sanmachi walk

↓

Hida beef dinner

↓

sake or cocktails

↓

Nakabashi

↓

walk back to hotel.

No taxis.

No trains.

Best Area for Families

I’d favour:

Takayama Station.

Reasons:

  • Easy with luggage
  • Easy bus access
  • Modern hotels
  • Larger rooms available
  • Convenient for day trips
  • Easy arrival and departure

And the historic centre is still:

walkable.

Best Area for Budget Travellers

Look around:

Takayama Station + Hanasatomachi.

There are several:

business hotels + apartment-style hotels + simpler accommodation options

around this area.

You don’t need to stay inside the Old Town to experience it.

Walk there.

Spend your money on:

Hida beef instead.

Best Area for Luxury Travellers

I’d choose one of two approaches.

Central Luxury Ryokan

Best if you want:

traditional service + food + historic Takayama.

Destination Ryokan

Best if you want:

onsen + relaxation + mountain atmosphere.

For a first visit:

I’d lean toward:

central.

Best Area for Nightlife

Stay around:

Honmachi + central Takayama.

Takayama nightlife isn’t enormous.

But there are:

  • Sake bars
  • Izakaya
  • Cocktail bars
  • Craft beer
  • Whisky
  • Late-night bars

around the central streets.

Staying nearby means:

you can walk home.

Our Takayama Nightlife Guide covers the evening scene in detail.

Best Area for Food

Again:

central Takayama.

You’ll have easy access to:

  • Hida beef
  • Takayama ramen
  • Hoba miso
  • Izakaya
  • Sake
  • Morning markets
  • Old Town snacks

Food is one of the main reasons to stay:

centrally.

Best Area for Hida Beef

You don’t need to choose your hotel around:

one restaurant.

Several Hida beef restaurants are scattered through central Takayama.

Stay between:

the station + Old Town

and you’ll have plenty of options within walking distance.

Read our:

Best Hida Beef Restaurants in Takayama

guide before choosing dinner.

Best Area Without a Car

Central Takayama.

Definitely.

You don’t need a car for:

  • Sanmachi
  • Morning markets
  • Takayama Jinya
  • Temples
  • Restaurants
  • Nightlife

For:

Hida Folk Village

take the local bus.

Best Area With a Car

Having a car gives you more flexibility.

You can stay:

slightly outside central Takayama

if the accommodation offers:

  • Parking
  • Onsen
  • Better rooms
  • Mountain setting

But don’t automatically assume a car makes an outer hotel better.

Parking and driving around historic central streets can be:

less convenient than walking.

Should You Stay in Sanmachi?

If atmosphere is your priority:

yes.

If transport is your priority:

probably not necessary.

Because Sanmachi is only around:

12 minutes from Takayama Station.

You can stay near the station and still visit:

morning + afternoon + night.

Should You Stay Near Takayama Station?

Yes.

Don’t dismiss the station area because you think it’s:

too far from the sights.

It isn’t.

That’s one of the most important things to understand about Takayama.

The city centre is compact.

Should You Stay Near Hida Folk Village?

Usually:

no.

Visit Hida Folk Village as an attraction.

Don’t base your first Takayama trip around it.

The historic centre has:

more restaurants + better evening atmosphere + transport + more attractions.

Should You Stay Outside Takayama?

Only if there’s a reason.

Good reasons include:

  • Specific ryokan
  • Onsen
  • Mountain views
  • Driving itinerary
  • Relaxation

Bad reason:

saving a tiny amount of money while making every day less convenient.

Hotel vs Ryokan in Takayama

This is worth thinking about.

Hotel

Better for:

  • Price
  • Flexibility
  • Transport
  • Longer stays
  • Independent travellers

Ryokan

Better for:

  • Experience
  • Japanese meals
  • Onsen
  • Couples
  • Special occasions

For a first Japan trip:

one night in a ryokan can be:

very memorable.

Is an Onsen Hotel Worth It?

Potentially.

Especially in:

winter.

Coming back after walking through snowy Takayama and sitting in a hot bath is:

excellent.

But don’t choose an inferior location purely because:

the hotel has a bath.

Several central hotels also offer:

public baths or onsen-style bathing.

How Much Do Hotels Cost in Takayama?

Prices vary dramatically by:

  • Season
  • Weekend
  • Festival dates
  • Cherry blossoms
  • Autumn foliage
  • Room size
  • Meal plan

As a rough planning range:

Budget

¥7,000–¥15,000 per room

Mid-Range

¥15,000–¥30,000

Upscale

¥30,000–¥60,000+

Luxury Ryokan

¥50,000+

often substantially higher depending on:

dinner + breakfast + room + private bath.

Treat these as planning ranges rather than fixed prices.

Takayama Accommodation Tax

Takayama now charges an:

accommodation tax.

The tax began in:

October 2025.

Current rates are charged:

per person, per night.

Accommodation under ¥10,000

¥100

¥10,000 to under ¥30,000

¥200

¥30,000 or more

¥300

It’s not a major expense.

But it’s worth knowing about when checking your final accommodation bill.

When Should You Book?

Normally:

Takayama has a good range of accommodation.

But certain periods are completely different.

Book much earlier for:

  • Spring Takayama Festival
  • Autumn Takayama Festival
  • Cherry blossom season
  • Autumn foliage
  • New Year
  • Popular winter periods
  • Japanese holiday weekends

Takayama Festival Accommodation

This is especially important.

The major festivals take place annually on:

April 14–15

and:

October 9–10.

If you’re visiting then:

book accommodation as early as practical.

Don’t expect:

cheap last-minute central hotels.

Festival dates create completely different demand.

Staying in Takayama in Winter

Location matters more in winter.

Takayama can receive:

significant snow.

Walking 15 minutes is easy in good weather.

Dragging luggage through:

snow + ice

is another matter.

If you’re visiting in winter and arriving by public transport:

I’d lean more strongly toward:

Takayama Station.

Then walk around town after you’ve dropped your bags.

Staying in Takayama in Spring

Spring is extremely popular.

If you’re travelling around:

cherry blossom season

or:

the April festival

book early.

Old Town accommodation can be particularly attractive because you’ll be able to walk through the historic streets:

early in the morning.

Staying in Takayama in Summer

Summer gives you more flexibility.

Evening walks become a major advantage of staying centrally.

In July and August:

Nakabashi is illuminated on scheduled summer evenings.

That makes:

Old Town + central Takayama

especially attractive.

Staying in Takayama in Autumn

Autumn is one of my favourite times to stay in central Takayama.

Cooler temperatures make walking easier.

The surrounding mountains change colour.

And the October festival creates enormous demand around:

October 9–10.

Book early.

Where to Stay If You’re Coming From Shirakawa-go

Stay:

near the station or centrally.

The bus from Shirakawa-go arrives at:

Takayama Nohi Bus Center

beside JR Takayama Station.

If you have large luggage:

station accommodation is incredibly convenient.

If you’ve forwarded your luggage:

I’d happily stay closer to the Old Town.

Where to Stay If You’re Going to Nagoya Next

Again:

Takayama Station

is extremely convenient.

You’ll be close to onward:

train + bus connections.

For a one-night stay:

this is probably the best answer.

Where to Stay If You’re Visiting Shirakawa-go as a Day Trip

Stay near:

Takayama Station.

Buses depart from the Nohi Bus Center.

You can:

wake up → walk to bus → visit Shirakawa-go → return → walk to hotel.

Simple.

Common Takayama Accommodation Mistakes

Thinking You Need to Stay Inside Sanmachi

You don’t.

The station is only around:

12 minutes away on foot.

Booking Too Far Outside Town

Don’t sacrifice location without a good reason.

Ignoring Your Luggage

A beautiful Old Town hotel becomes less charming while dragging:

30 kg of luggage through snow.

Staying Only One Night When You Have Time for Two

Takayama improves dramatically when you can experience:

early morning + evening.

Choosing a Ryokan Without Understanding the Meal Plan

Check whether your booking includes:

breakfast + dinner.

Booking a Remote Ryokan Then Planning a Night Out

Those two plans may conflict.

Waiting Until the Last Minute for Festival Dates

Don’t.

Choosing Based Only on Hotel Price

Location has real value in a walking destination.

Renting a Car Just Because Your Hotel Has Parking

You don’t need a car for central Takayama.

Takayama Station.

And when it’s time to leave:

the station is still close.

If you’re following the route we’ve been building:

early morning + after dark.

That’s when staying in Takayama really pays off.
